He started his career with local team ÍA, and moved to German team VfL Bochum in 1993. He played there until 1997, when he moved to K.R.C. Genk. In 2000 he moved to UD Las Palmas, but saw limited playing action and was loaned out to Derby County and Preston North End in England. At Derby he scored once in the league against West Ham United.[1] He proceeded to play for Bochum from 2002 to the 2004–05 season, in the middle of which (January 2005) he was signed by Stoke City, a club with a history of Icelandic players and coaches, including Gudjonsson's younger brother Bjarni Guðjónsson and father Guðjón Þórðarsson.
